Let The Son Shine

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world.
Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
— John 8:12

I love living in Buffalo. However, even those who live here are sometimes challenged by the weather. One of the biggest gripes I hear is that it’s always gray and cloudy here. The National Weather Service says Buffalo has some of the sunniest and driest summers in the Northeast. However, we average 155 sunny days, less than half the year.

A lot of folks from the Buffalo area spend time chasing the sun. People take regular breaks and vacations in the winter because they need sunshine. We all do. Sunlight brightens the day, and something about it makes us feel better. Research suggests sunlight affects our brains, causing them to release hormones that improve our mood.

Now that it’s June, we’re hitting our sunny time. With everyone so excited to get out and enjoy the sun, I’d ask us to consider how we prioritize enjoying “the Son.” It’s essential to seek and celebrate Him the way we chase sunshine. When was the last time He put a smile on your face the same way walking out the door into the sunshine usually does? When was the last time you started a conversation celebrating the joy He’s put on your heart the same way we so easily say, “Wow, what a nice day!” Jesus is the light of our world. We know that even when the skies are gray or stormy, He is with us. There’s just something in the way that keeps us from seeing him.

Jesus teaches us that “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, giving light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16) We should never forget that sometimes we’re the only encounter with the light some people experience. The Son may shine through us into dark places. Strive to reflect him well and brighten someone’s day as He comes through us.

As we approach these summer days, remember the presence and joy of Christ every moment we feel the “Son” shine on our faces, regardless of the weather.
