The Tough Stuff

4th Tuesdays, 7:00 PM
Fellowship Hall
Pastor Scott Johnson

What's the one question you've never gotten a chance to ask? Most Christians have a question about God that they hope you wanted to spend more time exploring. Pastor Scott and Linda B. will facilitate conversations about "The Tough Stuff." This study will study issues like divorce, abortion, LGBTQ identity, racism, and other challenging questions.

We're committed to making this table a safe place to explore and discuss hard things. We're not going to argue. We're not going to judge. We're not trying to persuade people that one answer is right and others are wrong. This table will be a safe place to discuss, learn, and grow. Our goal is to look at as much scripture as possible related to a topic, talk about our interpretations and experiences, and listen to one another. Hopefully, we'll all come away from the journey knowing more about the Bible and these difficult issues.

Join us as we take on "The Tough Stuff."

United Women in Faith

1st Thursdays, 12:30 PM, Fellowship Hall

United Women in Faith is a community of women whose purpose is to know God and experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.

The group normally meets throughout the year on the first Thursday of the month at 12:30 PM, except in January, February, July, and August.

Some of the missions we work on:

  • Work at the Spring and Fall Rummage & Bake Sales to help raise money for missions.

  • Work with Beechwood Nursing Home to mend and sew for the residents, make wheelchair and walker carrier bags, send birthdays cards to residents, and volunteer weekly.

  • And more!

You can send a message to Connie Clifford if you would like to know more.

Men’s Breakfast & Devotion

3rd Saturday of the month, 9:00 AM, at Bob Evans, 1925 Niagara Falls Blvd

All men are invited to the Men’s Breakfast Group on the 3rd Saturday of each month for breakfast, fellowship, devotions, and prayer. We meet at Bob Evans Restaurant in a separate room provided for small groups. All men 18 and over are welcome! This is an opportunity for men to meet and share with other Christian men in a small group setting.

If you would like to receive an email reminder before each breakfast, please send an email to Chris Pohto.

Women’s Book Club

3rd Wednesdays, 6:30 PM

The Women’s Book Club is open to all women and meets the third Wednesday of each month, year-round, at 6:30 PM at The Country Cottage or Pendleton Creek Pub (Check the calendar or contact Yvonne for each month's book and meeting place).

Join us! You do not need to read the book - we welcome all ladies at this monthly get together!

If you want to join the book club or have any questions, contact Yvonne Bova.

Beginner Pickleball

Wednesdays, 6:30 PM, Gym

Come join us for recreational pickleball! You can learn the basic rules, such as how to serve and keep score, in a fun and relaxed environment. The group is growing and improving each week, so it's a great opportunity to join the fun!

Country Line Dancing

1st & 3rd Tuesdays, 7:00 PM, Gym

Beginner classes, taught to the good old country music, past and present. $5 cost per person per class. No open toe shoes, leather shoes preferred. Come one and all!

Contact Tom Chiappone to learn more.

Watercolor Classes

Tuesdays at 1:00 PM, Saturdays at 10:00 AM, Art Room

Have you always wanted to try your hand at a new hobby? Here’s your opportunity! Virginia teaches a lesson in each class, both basic skills and advanced techniques! Each session is two hours in length, costs $7, and the goal is to do a painting at each session.

The classes can help remind you of the beautiful world we live in; nature, trees, birds, and mountains. Set aside all of the frustrations and negativity of the week at a watercolor class.

“When we create art, in this case, watercolor painting, we become co-creators with God, becoming helpers in the formation of paradise here on earth. These classes have given me faith once again in what it means to have hope.”

United Methodist Certified Lay Ministry

Do you ever feel like God is calling you to serve? To be a leader within the church, but not to be a pastor? There are three different categories of Lay Ministry within the United Methodist Church. But keep in mind that the first step for all Laity is to become a Certified Lay Servant. You cannot become a Certified Lay Speaker or Certified Lay Minister until you have served as a Certified Lay Servant.

That being the case, the first category in Lay Ministry is Certified Lay Servant. A Certified Lay Servant serves the local church or charge (and/or beyond) and:

  • Provides program leadership, assistance, and support

  • Leads meetings for prayer, training, study, and discussion

  • Conducts, or assists in conducting, services of worship, preaches the Word, or gives addresses

  • Provides congregational and community leadership and fosters caring ministries

  • Assists in the distribution of the elements of Holy Communion

The next category is Certified Lay Speaker. A Certified Lay Speaker is someone who feels called to preach, but not called to serve as a pastor. A Certified Lay Speaker serves by preaching the Word when requested by a pastor, district superintendent, or committee on Lay Servant Ministries, in accordance and compliance with ¶341.1 in the Book of Discipline. They provide what is called “Pulpit Supply.” They fill in for pastors who are going on vacation and need someone to fill in leading worship.

And the final category is Certified Lay Minister. A Certified Lay Minister (CLM) is a qualified United Methodist layperson called to congregational leadership as part of a ministry team under the supervision of a clergy person, but who often serves the church in many other ways.

Not all CLMs are called to preach and should not feel that if they don’t have that calling, they cannot be a CLM. There are many ways a CLM can serve their church.

A Certified Lay Minister:

  • Conducts public worship

  • Cares for the congregation

  • Develops new faith communities

  • Preaches the Word

  • Leads small groups

  • Establishes outreach ministries

  • Serves as a class leader

  • Engages in specialized ministries after appropriate training, such as in parish nursing and church planting

  • Teaches the Scriptures, doctrine, organization, and ministries of The United Methodist Church.

Pendleton Center Church has many trained Certified Lay Ministers! If you are interested in learning more, talk with one of our pastors or Linda Barczykowski to explore the process. And be sure to check out Chuck’s rattling’s on Certified Lay Ministry!
