He Restores My Soul

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
— 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Multiple leadership and productivity gurus have said that focus is a superpower. Even with packed to-do lists, we spend so much time scrolling on our phones and searching for things to watch on Netflix. Concentration is hard to come by when we have a lot on our minds or plates. Everyone feels overwhelmed and distracted. In a world where this behavior is the norm, focus is indeed a superpower.

Where’s your focus as we approach November? Our minds are bouncing from fall foliage to changing temperatures to Halloween to a presidential election to Black Friday and preparing for Christmas. I hope you noticed that something was missing from that list. That is because these other occasions and conversations seem to get more of our energy than Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a holiday, but giving thanks is a lifestyle that the Bible emphasizes. People will often lament that we need a day to remind ourselves to thank God for all that God has done, but if we’re honest, we have to ask how often it would happen without the day.

The verse above reminds us of themes repeated throughout the Bible,  “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances.” It’s easy to say, but it feels tough to do. Circumstances can be difficult, and as I mentioned earlier, we may be too busy or distracted. However, we have to remember that even in desperate circumstances, God is our provider. Even if the current moment isn’t great, God has been great in earlier moments.

If you sometimes struggle with how to be thankful, the Bible can help. This month, we’re moving through a sermon and worship series built around the 23rd Psalm, “He Restores My Soul.” The words of the 23rd Psalm are so familiar, but they may offer a framework for us to remember how much we have to be thankful for.

The Lord is my shepherd; I lack nothing. Even though there may have been periods when we experienced a need, God provided for us. Think of times when God gave you what you needed.

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters. There are always moments when God reminds us of the incredible beauty of Creation. Have you ever been aware of God’s presence in the feel of sunshine on your face, a gentle breeze, an incredible view, the laughter of family and friends, or any other number of natural ways? If so, thank God for showing up in these ways.

He refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. God reminds us of God’s truths through the Spirit, the Word, and the counsel of others. Thank God for a time when God taught you something you needed to learn.

Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. How great is knowing that the Almighty Ruler of the universe goes with you in your trials? God loves you enough to offer correction rather than leave us to suffer. Thank God for being present in times of fear and offering wisdom and guidance.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Even in the middle of difficult circumstances, God takes care of us. God not only takes care of our basic needs but also blesses us beyond our expectations. Thank God for being generous with you.

Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. God’s grace will carry us in this life and into eternity. Thank God for that amazing truth!

Cynicism and anxiety are everywhere today. Thanksgiving may be the antidote. Expressing gratitude to a God who loves, gives, forgives, and provides shouldn’t be hard. Don’t look past it or lose it in a larger list of things. I hope that you make giving thanks a regular focus in your life.
